Restore Chester County
Economic Action Steps — Camps
Camps usually operate on premise with day or overnight activities during the summer. In-person summer camps and other youth activities have cut out field trips, altered or eliminated team sports, and adjusted to grouping children in smaller cohorts, while also expanding virtual programming and facilitating remote learning.
Current Camp Practices
The following practices are being implemented by various camps around the county and nation to address COVID-19-related disruptions. These practices may be helpful for camps not currently using them.
- Work with local press outlets to publish stories about safety measures that have been taken.
- Assemble and distribute 'day camp kits' for parents to use at home.
- Offer virtual activity programs.
- Move activities outdoors as much as possible.
- Pivot youth programming to create supervised remote learning spaces during the school year.
- Cohort children into groups with limited contact and have small groups of campers stay together all day, each day.
- Have campers remain at least 6 feet apart and do not share objects.
Actions to Support Camps
The following actions by governments, economic development organizations, trade organizations, and others would provide support to camps during the current COVID-19 crisis.
- Provide technical assistance with social media/marketing and safety guideline compliance.
- Secure and distribute grant funding for COVID-19 testing, detection and mitigation equipment.
- Facilitate a safety 'self-certification' program that features consistent branding and signage.
