Economic Action Steps — Schools
Schools include both public and private schools. Schools closed due to COVID-19 and have had to adapt to remote learning as well as new staff and student needs. Some schools have reopened but are facing challenges meeting competing demands from parents, teachers, and health advocates.
Current School Practices
The following practices are being implemented by schools around the county and nation to address COVID-19-related disruptions. These practices may be helpful for schools not currently using them.
- Offer virtual learning programs.
- Pivot youth programming to create supervised remote learning spaces during the school year.
- Move activities outdoors as much as possible.
- Put children into smaller groups according to age to reduce contact.
- Assist students with technology needs.
- Provide opportunities for students to receive feedback from teachers verbally a well as in writing.
- Provide incentives for teachers teaching in-person classes.
Actions to Support Schools
The following actions by governments, economic development organizations, trade organizations, and others would provide support to schools during the current COVID-19 crisis.
- Provide technical assistance with social media/marketing and safety guideline compliance.
- Secure and distribute grant funding for COVID-19 testing, detection and mitigation equipment.
- Facilitate bulk purchasing of PPE for distribution to small operators.
